About Us

Pastoral Co Owners Ken Miller & Greg O'Neill

Pastoral Artisan Cheese, Bread & Wine, a venture of Pastoral Enterprises, LLC, is a European-inspired neighborhood cheese, specialty food and wine shop offering the highest quality, cut-to-order domestic and international specialty cheeses, freshly baked breads, perfectly chosen accompaniments and small production wines, along with hand-crafted, cheese loving beers.

Over time we have become known for our unique and delicious sandwiches, salads, artisan catering trays and beautiful gift baskets, all using the highest quality ingredients we sell in our store. Pastoral also provides cheese to some of Chicago’s finest restaurants for their cheese plates and culinary creations.

We first opened our doors in August of 2004 in Chicago’s East Lakeview neighborhood and subsequently opened our second location on Lake Street in Chicago’s bustling Loop in 2007. Our third location opened with the Chicago French Market in 2009. In the fall of 2012, we expanded our business with Bar Pastoral, a cheese and wine bistro located adjacent to our flagship Lakeview store, where you can sample from our curated list of fine wines, nibble on exquisite cheese plates and enjoy home-made, cheese-centric hot food. With our commitment to providing the highest level of service and education to our customers, we strive to make shopping for and consuming these artisan goods enlightening, approachable, fun and delicious!

Why Pastoral?

In a world of mass produced products stacked high on shelves in supermarkets, superstores and wholesale clubs, at Pastoral we believe there is still a place for small batch, high quality, hand-crafted products sold in an intimate environment with the most attentive and thoughtful service.

Artisan products like cheese, bread and wine, which hail from some of the most beautiful places on Earth, deserve to be showcased, cared-for and sold in a place that reflects their special roots. That place is Pastoral.

Mission Statement

We strive to make buying and eating great food and wine a fun, inviting and educational experience for neighbors near and wide who, like us, love to be delighted by life’s daily indulgences. At Pastoral, you'll find delicious and interesting palate pleasers and exceptional, truly helpful service.

Our Products

We take pride in representing a diverse body of producers creating small-batch specialty foods from around the world. In selecting which products to sell in our stores, preference is given to products and producers engaging in traditional production methods, environmentally sustainable practices, and high-quality artisan craftsmanship.

Our Vision

We will continually offer the finest classic and farmstead cheeses, handcrafted breads and small batch wines along with information about the producers, their methods and the best ways to enjoy their products. We will work passionately to inspire customer loyalty and pass along our passion and the in-depth understanding of the food and wine we sell, so that our customers are empowered to share their delicious finds with knowledge and excitement. We’ll do this with zero attitude and a whole lot of fun! No matter how big we grow, we will not forget the values and principles that got us here in the first place.

Our Values and Governing Principles

At Pastoral, we believe in:

  • Selling only the highest quality products in their optimal state.
  • Making heroes of our customers by de-mystifying specialty foods, helping them create solutions with artisan cheeses, breads, wines, craft beers and accoutrements.
  • Representing our producers and their products with pride and the utmost respect and care.
  • Creating a safe, rewarding and fun environment for our team.
  • Regularly supporting the community in which we live.
  • Building a profitable business, but not at the expense of any of the above.
  • Not taking life, or ourselves, too seriously -- it’s just cheese!
